Weathering v Erosion

Feedback from the last revision test suggests some pupils are still not sure about the difference between weathering and erosion. Both involve wearing away the landscape, but the basic distiction is:

Weathering is the BREAKING DOWN  of rock surfaces by elements of weather, such as FROST and  TEMPERATURE CHANGE. Weathering also refers to the work of PLANT ROOTS or ANIMAL ACTIVITY.
In weathering, rocks are NOT CARRIED AWAY.

Erosion is the wearing away and REMOVAL by MOVING agents such RIVERS, GLACIERS, WAVES and WIND.
Eroded material finally ends up on the SEA BED, as it is transported by streams and rivers into the sea.
